First Steps

What are the first steps when a loved one has passed away?

If you have just had a death, please accept our sincere condolences. We are aware of and respect the situation you are now in and we are honored to be considered to assist at this difficult time. Be assured, our staff of dedicated and trained professionals will offer expert assistance and guidance in caring for your loved one.

The next steps are somewhat dependent upon the circumstances of the death, and where it occurred. We are available 24/7 by telephone at (630) 932-1500 to answer any of your immediate questions. Below are some general guidelines for you to follow.

THE DEATH OCCURED IN A MEDICAL OR CARE FACILITY

Please do let us know that the death occurred. Most hospitals and care facilities have procedures in place for contacting and working with funeral homes, so be sure to let the facility know that you have selected our funeral home. They may have documentation that you will complete.

THE DEATH OCCURED IN A RESIDENCE

If the deceased was enrolled with a hospice program, hospice should be the first contact. In most other cases, the local police department will need to be contacted and make certain notifications before the deceased can be transported. Please call us (630) 932-1500, if you have any questions or need guidance on your next step.

REMEMBRANCE PLANNING CONFERENCE

We will schedule a time to meet to discuss and plan for a remembrance. The Planning Form listed below will provide us with information we need. Many families find it comforting and helpful to gather this information prior to our conference, so that they are better prepared to make decisions.

The follow items and information are helpful at the planning conference:

  • Cemetery deeds or information
  • A recent photo of the deceased
  • Clothing for the deceased, including undergarments
  • Glasses, jewelry, or other personal items of the deceased
